Why is the Blue Flag Important?
The Blue Flag award does not only mean a beautiful beach. This internationally recognized certification is based on serious criteria such as sea water analyses, environmental cleanliness, recycling systems, safety, accessibility for the disabled, and sustainable tourism practices. Therefore, the Blue Flag is considered more than just a tourism award; it is a sign of quality and safety.
Western Midilli’s New Goal: 19 Blue Flags in 2027
According to a statement by Western Midilli Mayor Taxiarchis Verros, the municipality aims to increase the number of Blue Flags by 2027. As part of this new goal, applications are also planned for Tsichranta Beach and Aspropotamos – Pedi Beach.
Midilli is No Longer Just a Nearby Island but a Quality Life Destination
In recent years, a significant portion of visitors coming to Midilli prefer the island not only for a beach holiday but also for gastronomy, natural life, thermal areas, hiking trails, stone villages, and cultural events. Especially with the increase in ferry services from Dikili and Ayvalık, Midilli has become one of the most popular routes for short weekend getaways.
Clean Sea, Calm Atmosphere, and Sustainable Tourism
While many tourism destinations in Europe are criticized for overcrowding, environmental issues, and unplanned construction, Midilli stands out as one of the rare islands that preserve its nature, maintain its tranquility, and strengthen the understanding of sustainable tourism. Receiving 31 Blue Flags in 2026 is regarded as a strong indicator of not only the beaches but also the overall quality of life on the island.
