Crete Travel Guide: Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Travel Plan

Rather than knowing Crete through a single port or a single beach, decide which region you want to explore. Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion each offer different sightseeing focuses. A holiday with an overnight stay on the island and a short visit at a cruise call should be planned as separate programmes.

Different starting points for the west and centre

Around Chania and Rethymno you can consider town sightseeing, and around Heraklion, Knossos and museum interests. Focusing on one region helps you avoid treating your accommodation as merely a place to sleep, far from the day's excursion. Do not aim to complete the whole island in a short visit.

Visiting Crete by cruise

Seeing Heraklion on a ship itinerary does not mean that the same call will happen on every date, or that all of Crete will be toured. Read the time in port, the time ashore and the last return time to the ship from the programme you have chosen. Check the date of the ship's itinerary, the time in port and the included services through the quote.

Flights and an overnight programme

Flight options are assessed according to the date and the departure location. If a connection is needed, confirm whether the tickets are booked together or separately and how the baggage will travel. Add the land transfer to the region where you will stay on the island to the total journey. Suitable flight and connection options are determined according to your travel date.

How many days should you set aside?

Set the duration according to the regions you want to see. Spending a few nights in one region and using different accommodation points are different plans. Periods such as four to five days can be a travel suggestion; they are not a minimum rule or a guarantee of completing the whole island.

Let's assess the current conditions together

Crete is not automatically included under a general gate visa in the short sea crossing category. Learn the current entry requirements that suit your passport and travel style from an official source. You can share your date, flight or ship preference and accommodation expectations with our team; the applicable scope of the service is confirmed separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

First, decide which region you want to spend time in. Instead of trying to cover the entire island in a short visit, set aside time for tours within the region you choose.

Duration depends on the regions you want to see and your style of travel. The sample durations mentioned in the guide are not a guarantee of seeing the entire island, nor a mandatory minimum time.

On a cruise visit, the time spent in port and the last return time to the ship are decisive. In an overnight program, however, the stay area, daily transportation, and flight or sea connections are planned together.
