Ras Mohammed Diving Area Guide

Ras Mohammed is an important protected area that divers researching the Sharm El Sheikh region come across. Its name is sometimes used as the title of a boat tour, sometimes as the title of a diving day. However, the region covers several points; the phrase “Ras Mohammed trip” alone does not explain which activity you will take part in.

Separate the region from the dive site

On the regional map of the local dive operator, different points such as Shark Reef, Yolanda Reef, Jackfish Alley and Ras Zaatar are listed. These are examples for research; they do not mean that every programme visits all of them. Entry, exit and conditions can also differ between two dives in the same region.

Why are Shark and Yolanda mentioned together?

The names Shark and Yolanda are often seen side by side in Ras Mohammed dive plans. Ask the operator which reef section the programme targets and whether this is a single dive or separate stops. The word “Shark” in a site name is not a promise of a shark encounter.

Marine life and underwater scenery

Hard and soft corals and reef fish stand out in the region's promotion. The dive experience is not only about searching for large animals; the structure of the reef and the behaviour of the fish are also part of the observation. An encounter with a specific shoal, turtle or other animal is not guaranteed.

Are a boat tour, snorkelling and scuba diving the same service?

Being on a excursion boat does not mean you have purchased certified diving service. Check the type of participation, guiding, equipment and training coverage separately. The programme should explain whether snorkellers and divers are on the same boat and how different groups are managed.

Daily conditions and experience

When planning a reef dive, sea conditions, the diver's training and recent experience are considered together. The entry/exit arrangement, the procedure if you become separated from the group, and boat meeting information should be clarified in the on-site briefing. Regional promotion on the internet does not replace personal route approval.

Visiting a protected area

Not touching corals, not collecting souvenirs from the sea, and not disturbing animals for photographs are part of preparing for a visit. Review the operator's briefing and CDWS environmental resources for current activity areas and site rules. It should also be stated in writing whether park or local service fees are included in the offer.

Frequently asked question: Is it included in a Sharm accommodation?

A hotel booking does not automatically include the Ras Mohammed boat programme. Confirm transfers, boat day, number of dives, meals and local fees separately.
