Cebu Dive Route and Island Connections Guide

Cebu can be seen as a flight destination, a city stay, or a broad diving route. These are not the same place and not the same daily program. When planning your trip, first decide which area you will stay in, then place your dive days and island connections.

The difference between Mactan, Moalboal and Malapascua

The PADI country guide treats the reefs around Mactan, the sardine runs of Moalboal and the thresher sharks of Malapascua as distinct regional experiences. Do not think of these three as stops that are easily reached every day from a single hotel. Accommodation changes and the actual transfer flow should be seen in the offer.

Arriving in Cebu is not arriving at the dive island

Having Cebu in your flight plan does not mean you will have reached the Malapascua hotel. Connections such as the Maya port in the north and the island boat can be arranged separately. Flight time, land transport to the port, waiting time and sea conditions are considered together. If a same-day connection is not suitable, a night on the main island may be needed.

One area or several bases?

On a short trip, staying at a single base can simplify the daily routine. On a longer program, different areas can be combined, but each hotel change means equipment handling and transfer time. Weigh your diving goals together with your wish to rest and see the city. A stop shown on the map is not automatically a dive day in the program.

City time and non-diving companions

Time set aside for culture and city sightseeing in the Cebu city area differs from the beach program on the island. Do not assume a companion will join every dive boat. The scope of shared accommodation, city transport and separate activities should be explained at the outset.

Transfer offer checklist

  • Are the pickup point, the actual hotel and the port name specified?
  • Are land and sea transport under the responsibility of the same operator?
  • How is luggage and dive equipment transport arranged?
  • What happens to accommodation and extra fees in case of late arrival or boat cancellation?
  • Have the last dive and the last island crossing been planned together with the return flight?

Frequently asked question: does a "Cebu tour" include Malapascua?

Only if it is explicitly stated in the current daily program. The general name Cebu does not guarantee an island crossing or a dedicated diving service.
