Bursa Han District: A City Walk Through the Historic Bazaar

The Hanlar District is a strong starting point for getting to know Bursa's historic center. Here, shopping, architecture and everyday life meet on the same streets. Standing in the courtyard of a historic inn and watching its surroundings gives a different impression than a tour that merely lists the names of buildings.

How should you look at the historic inns?

The inner courtyard, the arcades and the rooms around them are good clues for thinking about how the architecture of these inns worked. In Bursa's official promotion, Emir Hanı, Geyve Hanı and other examples are each described separately. While visiting a building, pay attention to the relationship between the lower and upper floors, the entrance and the use of the courtyard.

The trading culture is still alive

In the narrative of Bursa and Cumalıkızık as a World Heritage Site, the Hanlar District is an important part of the city's economy. Evaluating today's shops together with the historic structures, without separating them from each other, adds to the meaning of the visit. Do not automatically assume that a business's current use is the same as the function the building had when it was first constructed.

Where should you start the walk?

You can choose the area around the Ulu Cami as a focal point and spend time in the bazaar and the historic inns. Mark a few courtyards that interest you on the map and leave room for a food or drink break in between. Rather than entering many shops, slowly seeing one section makes it easier to notice architectural details.

Keep the city-center day focused

Do not think of İznik or Uludağ as a short extension of this walk. The different areas of the province require separate transport and visit times. While touring places of worship in the historic center, respect how the space is used, and in shopping areas, be mindful of the movement of workers and other visitors.
