Balıkesir Travel Guide: Center, Aegean and Marmara Coasts

A Balıkesir trip is not made up of beach holidays alone. The city centre, the Aegean coasts of Ayvalık and the Gulf of Edremit, the Marmara side around Erdek and Kapıdağ, and the surroundings of Lake Manyas each offer different travel experiences. This guide helps you choose a route without confusing the places within the province.

Balıkesir centre and cultural stops

Altıeylül and Karesi are the starting points for getting to know Balıkesir's city centre. A city walk can be planned around the Zağnos Paşa Mosque, the bazaar and the Kuva-yi Milliye Museum. Staying on the coast while visiting the centre requires a separate transport plan.

Aegean coasts: Ayvalık and the Gulf of Edremit

Ayvalık can be considered together with Cunda, Küçükköy, Altınova and its olive oil culture. Akçay and Altınoluk are attached to Edremit, while Burhaniye is a separate district. Rather than squeezing each one into a single day, it is more sensible to choose nearby stops based on where you are staying.

For detailed planning, see our Ayvalık travel guide and Gulf of Edremit: Akçay, Altınoluk and Burhaniye.

Marmara coasts and the lake area

Erdek and Kapıdağ are on the Marmara side. Around Lake Manyas (Bird Lake), wetlands and bird watching come to the fore. For the visitor area of Kuşcenneti National Park, separately consider the direction of Bandırma; do not assume the lake's name and the district boundary are the same.

Journey from Balıkesir to Mytilene: Ayvalık and Akçay

Ayvalık is a district of Balıkesir. Akçay, meanwhile, is attached to the Edremit district of Balıkesir. In a Mytilene plan, the departure information of the product purchased, the terminal on the ticket and the meeting point should all be checked together. Mention of participation from Akçay alone does not show that the ferry departs from Akçay; whether a land transfer is included should be confirmed separately.

Dikili and Aliağa belong to İzmir province. For the regional location of these two departure points, see the İzmir travel guide.
